Welcome to All Souls: Between the Stacks
Exploring the history, ideas, and richly layered characters behind Deborah Harkness’s All Souls novels.
If you found your way here, there’s a good chance you love Deborah Harkness’s All Souls series as much as I do.
Like many readers, I first stepped into this world through A Discovery of Witches. What begins as the story of a historian and a mysterious manuscript opens into something much larger. A world shaped by old libraries, forgotten traditions, centuries of history, and characters whose lives stretch across time.
Part of what makes these books stay with me is how real that world feels.
Deborah Harkness is a historian, and the series draws on real intellectual traditions. Alchemy, early science, manuscript culture, and the long history of scholarship quietly support the story in ways that are easy to miss on a first read.
All Souls: Between the Stacks grew from the joy of exploring those details.
Each week, I follow one question through the story. Sometimes through history, sometimes through a character, and sometimes a small detail that feels worth looking at more closely.
If you’ve ever wanted to stay a little longer in this world, you’re very welcome here.
